Yesterday I had a temporary panic attack when I looked at the calendar and realized that it was the exact 8 week out mark until I am officially Mrs. McBrayer!  While there is nothing I can tell you to avoid having the same mini panic attack, hopefully these next points will help alleviate the stress that could follow.

Here are just a few things that I decided were the most important to get done in order to be able to enjoy the time we have left in our engagement:

  • Invitations in the mail – exactly 8 weeks out – make sure invitations are mailed.
  • Touch base with your vendors to set up appointments for final preparations.
  • Meeting with coordinator  -  I am meeting with my friend who is coordinating our wedding and venue contact next week to go over everything and make sure we are all on the same page.  We will also figure out the final number of tables so the florist can also be prepared as well.
  • Meet with florist – make sure everyone is covered – mothers’ flowers, ushers, guest book attendant, readers, anyone else that plays a part in  your wedding.
  • Bridal gown fitting – make final preparations to have your final fitting and arrangements to have your dress pressed/steamed before the big day.
  • Bridal Portraits – not a requirement, but something fun to do if you want to display your picture at the reception.
  • Hair appointments – talk to your stylist and make your appointments to do your color touch ups and trim and to do a trial run of your hair and make-up.  I am using my bridal portrait day as my trial run.
  • Rehearsal Dinner – send out invitations and make sure everything is on target to run smoothly.  If your future in-laws are handling, let them handle it.  If you are doing it yourself (like we are) then do not be afraid to ask for help.  I asked a couple of my aunts to handle the day of prep for us.  You will go crazy otherwise:)
  • Meet with your Minister/Officiant – we are doing a few counseling sessions with our Minister, so be sure and get those scheduled if you need to.  You will also go through and discuss the outline of the ceremony during this time.
  • Programs – after your meeting with your minister you can start laying out how the program will flow and get them printed.
  • Bachelorette Party- if you aren’t going on a formal bachelorette party, then just plan a fun night out with friends.  You will need it!
  • Thank You Notes – have a plan for thank you notes – get them personalized or printed before the wedding so you have them ready for when you get back from the honeymoon.
  • ENJOY – have a few date nights where wedding talk is banned.  Just enjoy being an engaged couple and relax!

I hope these few hints keep you from having a meltdown!  There are wedding checklists out there to help you keep it all straight.  The Knot offers a personalized one with your wedding date.  Just remember to breathe and in the end you will be married and that is what is important!

Happy Planning!

The past few weeks Brandon and I have been overwhelmed with the kindness and generosity from our friends and family for our wedding showers.   So far we have had 3 showers hosted by different people…one from my friends, one from my dad’s side of the family and one from Brandon’s family.  With 2 more on the calendar before the wedding I am seriously humbled by how much love has been shown to us.

Brandon and I at our last shower

To show our thankfulness to those hosting the showers we have been getting each of our hostesses a small token of our appreciation.  It does not have to be anything big, just something that you know they will enjoy.

Here are a few ideas for hostess gifts:

  • Cute tote bags – I recently got my 2 hostesses the cutest little tote bags at Peggy’s Gifts on Clay Avenue.  Luckily they are my neighbor and have TONS of cute ideas perfect for hostess gifts:)  One of the bags was even insulated, so it was perfect for the mommy to be to tote bottles, etc.
  • Mani/Pedi gift card- This is something that women cannot get enough of, so you can’t go wrong!  An hour in the mani/pedi chair can make you feel pampered and revitalized.
  • Entertainment ware – One of my hostesses had recently moved into a new home, so we got her some fun glasses for entertaining from Pier One.  They were cute and inexpensive.
  • Stationery- A gal can never have too many cute note cards!  If you can think far enough ahead, have them personalized with their name or monogram.

Remember, it really does not matter how big the gift is.  Just that you thought enough to get them something they will enjoy.  Something they wouldn’t do for themselves.  They are making you feel pampered by hosting your shower, so do the same for them.

Happy Planning!

Your wedding color sets the tone from the very beginning when sending out your invitations, to the linens on the tables during the reception.  The start off point is when you choose the color of your bridesmaid dresses.  The dress color you end up with plays a major role in the look and feel of your wedding.

Once you have chosen your girl’s dresses a great way to help in the rest of the planning is to order a fabric swatch.  This fabric swatch can then be taken to your invitation appointment, florist appointment, linen appointment , tuxedo appointment, and so on.  It’s important to know that just as every designer has different styles of dresses, they have different policies when ordering a fabric swatch.

What you can expect is that fabric swatches typically take anywhere from 1 – 4 weeks to come in. Some designers will not allow swatches to be mailed out until your dress order is sent in to them.  Others have the option to go online yourself and place the swatch order without going through a retailer, like Dessy

When your swatch comes in remember that your dresses will be cut off a different dye-lot and may vary slightly from the dye-lot used for your dresses.  This is because silk fabric contains variances in shading and is completely normal.

Having a fabric swatch can be so helpful.  Just check with your dress retailer to find out the best way to go about ordering yours.

Selecting your save the date cards and invitations are very important in setting the tone for your big day!  Brides these days have a ton of options to choose from and that can make it more difficult.

After  your colors, theme, venue and time are selected it is your choice on whether to send a save the date.  Personally, we decided to save a bit of money and fore go the save the date.    That being said, I have received so many cute options before!  Refrigerator magnets, Christmas cards…even a save the date via Facebook…yes, you read that right Facebook is taking over the world!

Photo Booth Save the Date

In order to get an idea of what style you like look at different planning blogs and websites.  For example, Style Me Pretty has gorgeous pictures of real weddings and lists the vendors they use.  There are also some preferred vendors listed so you can browse their websites and see what you fall in love with and find your personal style.

Personally, I am mix between traditional and fun and I think that reflects perfectly in our invitation.  Luckily, I have a dear friend, Elizabeth Henderson with Polka Dot Papers, that has been helping me with invitations for years now.  In our meeting I told her my preliminary ideas and also came prepared with how many invitations we needed and when we wanted to get them in the mail (8 weeks prior to the date).   She produced some samples for me and we chose the font style and look we liked best!  I LOVE what she came up with and it perfectly incorporates our style and colors without going overboard.  One other thing we did to save a bit of money is a reply postcard!  This saves having to buy another envelope and postcard postage is about half of what a normal stamp costs.  If you are tech saavy, you can set up a wedding website and request guests to RSVP via internet!  One of my New York friends did this last year and it was too cool!

Our traditional, yet fun invitation that I LOVE!

The next question is…to calligraphy or not calligraphy??  While it is traditional and gorgeous, we took an easier route and are having Polka Dot Papers print the outside and inside envelopes for us.  Technology makes this super simple these days via an Excel Spreadsheet and mail merge.  This will save us a ton of time and money, but still look nice and match the font on our invitation.

Bridesmaid Tip: Offer to help your bride with the stuffing/stamping of the invitations!  Have a girls night…pop open a bottle of wine and enjoy!  This will take a load off of your bride’s shoulders and give you an excuse for a girls night too:)

Happy Planning!

How does one decide their perfect wedding songs? There are so many choices!

The first one that comes to mind and is a must is your “First Dance” song. Some couples make this song “their song” – which usually means it was the first song they heard together on their first date. Or maybe the first song they danced together to. Or in some cases I have seen (heard) it be a song with a message that represents their relationship. When my best friend got married, her “First Dance Song” was called “Looks like we made it” by Shania Twain. It couldn’t have fit their relationship any more perfect than if the song had been personally written for them. I like this idea the most. This way while people are watching you share your first dance, they can listen to the words tell a story about the couple. I have been to one wedding where their “First Dance” song was the first song that came on the radio on their first date. To this day I don’t remember the name of the song or who it was by, but it was heavy metal and I can imagine very awkward to dance to (considering how awkward it was to watch them try to dance to) and there was clearly no “special message”.

Once you have the very important “First Dance Song” taken care of, it’s time to move on to the equally important “Father Daughter Song”. I understand not everyone is close to their fathers, or perhaps their fathers are not around to share in this special day… but the weddings I have been to the Fathers have been present and this dance has been special. Being a HUGE country music fan (largely in part because of the story that most country songs tell) there are several songs that come to mind for this particular dance. Tim McGraw’s “I Loved her First” or perhaps “Butterfly Kisses” by Bob Carlisle (which has been re-done several times by country artists such as Garth Brooks).

The one thing that is kind of a bummer is that there are SO many songs out there… but some how only a handful of them make the list for these two categories of wedding songs. Before my best friend got married, she had a few of us over and we spent hours trying to help her find her “perfect” song. We sat around her kitchen table with her i-Pod plugged in, our lap tops on hand and a box of old CD’s we hadn’t seen for years. We opened a bottle of wine and spent the whole night coming up with different songs that brought back memories for us… but also told stories that related to my friend and her soon to be husband. We had so much fun. I think involving your bridesmaids in this task is a great way to get different opinions and they will no doubt come up with songs or artists you may not have come up with on your own.

Now in all fairness, I would almost guarantee that @ some point, you will attend a wedding and hear the same song that you heard at a wedding the year before during one of these two dances. Does it really matter though? I don’t think so. In the moment that the song is playing, and the two people are dancing… all that matters is the happiness that theses people are sharing and the beautiful message or story that is being told by the song. If you do like one of the more popular first dance songs, perhaps you can make it your own by having it sung to you by someone important to you instead of using the DJ version. Little touches like that can turn something that’s “already been done” into something that is yours.

I am going to leave you with the “First Dance” link below. I know you have all seen it a million times… but I think it is just too fun and fabulous to not mention!!! I am not going to lie… depending on who I end up marrying, if they are “cool” enough… I many just reenact something like this myself. ;)

Happy Wedding Planning to you all! I hope you have fun going through old song books and current popular albums in search of your perfect wedding songs.

DIY Spa Day

My husband asked me recently what kind of hobby I would take up if I had more time (and endless amounts of cash, of course).  I immediately answered, “Going to the spa!”

Times are tight these days, so the lavish visits to the spa for bridal parties are likely not happening as often as they used to.  So why not bring the spa to you?  Choose a bridesmaid’s house that will be comfortable for everyone, and ask each bridesmaid to bring an ingredient or two.  Here are some of my favorite at home treatments:

FACE

I found my favorite at-home facial mask recipes at hubpages.com (and they cost next to nothing since you probably have the ingredients at home)

Banana-Avacodo Facial Mask

per person: 1/2 over-ripe banana, 1/2 over-ripe avacado, 2 tbsp plain yogurt, 1 tsp olive oil

Mush ingredients together and leave on your face and neck for about 20-30 minutes.  I use a warm washcloth over the sink to take this off (mess note: drape yourself with a towel for this one and don’t walk around the house while it’s on…it’s pretty messy).  This mask leaves my face feeling so fresh and new!

Peach Facial Mask

per person: 1/2 ripe peach, 1 egg white, 1 tsp plain yogurt

Put ingredients in a blender and leave on for about 30 minutes.  I put a washcloth in the microwave for a few to take this one off – it helps loosen the egg whites, then I splash with cool water.  I love this mask because it makes my skin feel tighter (and younger).

FEET

Foot Soak

Someone taught me once to fill a shallow plastic tub with warm water and a few drops of peppermint oil and eucalyptus oil – so easy and feels incredibly refreshing.

Then lather up with peppermint foot lotion (my favorite is the Mentha Foot Lotion at Bath and Body) microwave a wet hand towel, and wrap around your feet – ahhhhhh.

Even with a smaller bridal party, you’ll spend very little money and leave feeling pampered and refreshed.  Pop open some wine and serve yummy cheeses and veggies – what a great girls’ day!
