Pocket This Style Idea!

A funny little trend has been creeping into many wedding and bridesmaid dresses lately:  pockets!  In AZ we have a lot of weddings that give off a more casual vibe, the heat, the outdoor venues, all of it leans a little more toward the casual, and a cute new trend is adding that laid-back touch into the dresses of 2010 weddings, and that’s all these super-cute pocketed dresses!  Let’s take a look at this trend and how to wear it best!

Pocketed Wedding Dresses
This trend is not for every event.  If you’re being married in a traditional ceremony in a vaulted cathedral, pockets on your wedding dress just aren’t quite the style you should be looking for.  BUT if you’re being married in a relaxed style, these dresses will fit your event so perfectly. It’s also functional:  lipstick, vows or toast note cards, rings, bobby pins– if you needed to, you have a place to stash this stuff!

Pocketed Bridesmaid Dresses
These dresses are just so freaking cute!  These dresses are so perfect for warmer weather fun, and again these pockets are really functional for your girls!  Bridesmaids usually DO need to carry some back-up bride makeup, toast note cards, hair pins, random objects that you, the bride, just don’t know what to do with, and if your girls all have pockets, you have portable walking storage!  Also, just think of the pictures of you and all the girls leaned back, hands in pockets, enjoying the day!

While it’s not for every bride, this trend is super cute and a nice fun touch to modern weddings!

Nothing cuter than a little girl in one of these adorable dresses!  She can stow away her flower petals and her hair bow later when she’s coming apart and dropping all her accessories on the dance floor.

Jamie and Emile were married on a beautiful late Kentucky spring day on May 29, 2010.  Jamie lives in Los Angeles, but knew she wanted to come home to Lexington for her big day.  Planning the wedding from across the country was a huge task to undertake, but with the help of Always Planned, the results were stunning!  If you have not been to the Headley-Whitney Museum it is well worth a visit.

Jamie just shared these photos from her wedding with us by her photographer Harper Smith Photography yesterday and I knew I had to share them immediately! Jamie’s navy, green and accents of blue created a very classic, beautiful feel for the wedding.  Her bridesmaids were outfitted in After Six Style 6553 in Blueberry Taffeta.  This style suits many body types and is such a timeless dress!

Congratulations to Jamie and Emile!  We wish you a lifetime of happiness!

Natasha was one of the very first brides to come through the doors of Twirl Lexington.  From the moment she came in her sense of style and sweet personality came through.  Actually before Natasha even came in, one of her fabulous bridesmaids came in to check things out first and get an idea of what dresses we had to match the blush pink the bride had in mind!

Natasha and Morgan were married in a perfect outdoor setting in Morgan’s parent’s backyard in picturesque horse country in May.  The bridesmaids wore Dessy Collection styles 2787 and 2799 in Blush.  The effect was quite stunning!  In fact, after seeing Carrie Underwood’s wedding pictures I think she stole some ideas from Natasha…blush bridesmaid dress, pink sash on the wedding gown, and pink kissing balls!

A special thanks to Alumbra Photography for sharing these beautiful pictures with us!  Congratulations to Morgan and Natasha!  We wish you a lifetime of happiness.

Thank you notes are an absolute MUST to show your gratitude for the outpouring of love you experienced during your wedding.  While e-mail, texting, website and Facebook posts are appropriate for some things…they most certainly do not replace the kind gesture of a hand written note and should not replace your wedding thank you cards.

Some people will tell you that you have a grace period of a year to write your thank yous after the wedding, but why leave it hanging over your head for that long??  Our goal was to have them done as quickly as possible after we returned home from our wedding.  We are now 6 weeks post wedding and just have a few left to write for gifts we recently received.

As for the style of your thank you cards, that is personal preference.  You can have cards printed before your wedding with your new name on them, but we opted to share a wedding photo on ours.   Polka Dot Papers, who did our wedding invitations, offered to do a photo card for us.  One of my bridesmaids had these made by Grey Ink a few years ago and I loved the card and still have it on my refrigerator!  When we returned from our honeymoon I sent her a photo and she had the cards to us within a few days.  In the mean time we made sure we had recorded all the gifts given to us so we did not leave anyone out.

Deanna's Thank You Card by Grey Ink

To make the card writing more fun, we cooked dinner a few evenings and made a date night out of it.  Brandon wrote the cards to his friends and family and I did to mine.  The wording does not have to be anything profound…just thank them for taking the time to come to the wedding (if they did) and how much their love and support means to you.  If a monetary gift was given, you don’t have to mention the amount, just that you appreciate their generosity and how much it will help as newlyweds.

In the end, it is the act of taking the time to write the note that matters most.

Happy Writing!

Last summer Lindsay and Paul were married at Chaparral Christian Church, followed by a reception at the beautiful Millennium Resort in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Lindsay and her mom did a great job planning the wedding, and Visionyard Studios Photography can be credited for the wonderful photographs from the big day.

Lindsay’s bridesmaids looked absolutely fabulous wearing the Jenny Yoo ‘Jocelyn’ dress in Poppy Red Silk Shantung. This dress is both fun and chic at the same time, and definitely rewearable. For one of Lindsay’s girls it was the perfect Valentine’s Day dress :)

Lindsay and Paul, thank you so much for sharing your special day with Twirl! We hope your first year of marriage has been amazing :)

Our guest blog today is from Sarah Hagerty with Hagerty Photography. I actually met Sarah at Twirl Chandler when she came in to get a bridesmaid dress for her friend’s wedding. How fun is that! We had a blast playing dress up!

Here is a little on Sarah:
Our photography style is modern elegance with a fashionable flair.  I was born and raised in Phoenix, AZ.  I have had formal training, graduating from Northern Arizona University is 2002 with Sociology and Photography.  I have always loved photography!  I really keep up with the trends and draw some of my inspiration from fashion as well as bridal magazines.  Ask any bride or groom we have worked with – I tend to get a bit giddy when in the moment and having fun!  I love gorgeous colors, contrast, and playing with the lighting to make a picture a bit different than the norm.

Tiffany and Brandon were recently married at The Wright House  in Mesa, Arizona, and I’ll share with you why I love everything about their wedding :)

First, I adore the pictures from their big day, which were captured by Leo Patrone Photography

Tiffany’s bridesmaids also happened to wear my favorite dress , Priscilla of Boston (Style 1515) in satin. Their shoes and jewelry were the perfect complements to the fabulous dress!

And we can’t forget the precious flower girls who donned Melissa Sweet dresses (Style MS 3) in Silk Charmeuse. (The ring bearers were pretty handsome as well :) )

But the cutest detail of the special day was  the groom’s surprise for the bride :) According to Tiffany..

“Brandon sang his vows to me… playing the ukulele, and each of his groomsmen and our officiant also joined in and played an instrument. Brandon spent 9 months writing the song, and rehearsed with the group three days before the wedding. ”

Click Here to see the video footage that family members captured of the vows!

Tiffany and Brandon, thank you so much for allowing Twirl to be a part of your big day and sharing your wonderful memories. We wish you a lifetime of happiness!

It’s the same every year in Arizona – we’re bragging about our amazing weather all through March and April, then like a train out of nowhere, the unbearable heat hits without warning.   My 15-month-old and I love to sit outside in the mornings, but that’s officially over for the season.  I tried to suffer through it today, but I was sweating and eyeing the pool by 8:00am.  Ugh!

I surely don’t envy you girls who are on bridesmaid duty during the hot summer months, and I myself have done it before, so I know what to expect.  Here are some tips for making the heat a little more bearable…

1) Bring a cooler with ice packs.  You can take this with you while all the outdoor photos are being taken.  An ice pack on the back of the neck, feet, or wrists can provide instant relief.

2) Stay inside in the air conditioning until you absolutely have to go outside.  This might seem obvious, but there are so many bridal parties who suffer through standing around in the heat when they could run indoors to escape for a couple minutes.

3)  Take your heels off unless there are photos being taken.  Wearing spa sandals will keep your feet cooler – and your feet won’t sweat like they would in regular flip flops.

4) Drink water!  Throw a bunch in the cooler with your ice packs.  Skip the champagne until later – it will just make you feel tired in the heat.

5)  Bring umbrellas for the bridal party – if you have to stand in the heat, these can provide shade.

6)  Use tissue as a barrier between your underarms and dress – sweatmarks are not a good fashion accessory.

If the wedding is outside, you’ll have to suffer through it, but it won’t be as bad if you’ve taken care to stay cool before the ceremony.  Plus, you’ll hopefully be so caught up in your happiness for the couple, you won’t even notice….for a few minutes anyway.  :)

Like I said last week…I do not have many things at all that I would change about our wedding, so this blog will be much shorter than last week!  Here are just a few tips for making your wedding day the best it can be:

  • Do not run late!  Running late turns into stress, so do your best to be on time for everything.  We were cutting it very close on time after we got our hair done and it made me a little anxious and I felt rushed to get to the venue for photos.
  • Have a conversation with your photographer about exactly how the picture time will go.  Our photo time seemed a little scattered and we did not feel like we got all the pictures we would have liked to have done.  If the photographer does not offer a check list of exact family shots you want then make sure you let them know.
  • If your ceremony is outdoor then consider doing the group photos really early or inside the venue.  Our guests started arriving 45 minutes early and we had to wrap up our photos early so everyone wouldn’t see us before the wedding.  Again, I felt really rushed and that is not a good feeling.
  • Do not forget to thank everyone involved for making your day extra special…this includes vendors, friends and family!
  • Do not forget to look around at the guests right before you walk back down the aisle to take a mental picture of who all was in attendance.  Do the same thing at the reception a few times.  These are memories you will treasure forever.

Take this moment to look out at the crowd before you walk back down the aisle.

An oldie but a goodie. I just can’t fall out of love with this Amsale dress (style #G425C).

I am very much into the chiffon look right now. This dress is fabulous. As cute as it is as a halter, it is equally as cute if you tuck the little straps down and wear it as a strapless. This dress is flattering on all body types and very easy to wear. It can be dressed up or dressed down… which we all know I am a HUGE fan of.

One of my other FAVORITE things about Amsale is their “family member” options. They have so many dresses to choose from if you want each girl in a different dress, yet all the same color/fabric. Not to mention they have some fun, vibrant colors.

Check out Amsale at Twirl Chandler.

Happy Wedding Planning.

5th and Wine is located in the heart of “Old Town Scottsdale” and is the perfect location for your rehearsal dinner. 5th and Wine, a restaurant and wine lounge, shares the same owners as Humble Pie (located next door to our Scottsdale Twirl) as well as The Living Room located not too far from our Chandler Twirl.

Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights they have live music… which I have heard first hand and it’s great. They have a private room off the main bar that is perfect for a gathering of close friends and family and can seat 40 guests comfortably.

They also have a fabulous covered patio that can seat 50 guests comfortably!

It is perfect for those amazing Arizona evenings. Their menu is wonderful and has something to please everyone.

What I love about this place is that after a delicious dinner and great wine shared with family and friends, you are right in the middle of Old Town. You and your guests can WALK to another location to continue the fun of the night.

You will definitely want to check this place out. If not for your rehearsal dinner, take your bridesmaids there for a “girls night”. It has a really great atmosphere. Tell them TWIRL sent you! :)

Happy Wedding Planning.

Now that it has been a few weeks since our wedding, I can think more clearly about what advice to give to other brides and bridesmaids.  I was so emotional about everything for a while after the wedding…and admittedly even a little depressed it was all over.

View from the back where Dad and I waited

View from the back where Dad and I waited to walk in.

Here are a few of my favorite things or the “Do’s” I would suggest:

  • Do spend the night before with family or friends.  It was so nice to wake up at my parent’s house and be able to relax that morning with them.
  • If everyone is going to the same salon, go early and hang out while everyone is getting their hair and make up done.  Plan for mimosas and brunch and just enjoy everyone.
  • Have your photographer join for salon time.  I think we had some great shots just hanging out together.  Brandon and his guys played golf that morning and the photographer joined them for a bit as well!  Capture every moment!
  • DO have a person serving as your wedding coordinator.  Even if you can’t afford someone, have a friend that is organized help out.  Ours was invaluable!  She took the dresses to the venue and made sure everything ran smoothly for the wedding and reception.
  • Do have someone video the wedding ceremony for you.  Once I started down that aisle it is all a blur, so it was nice to watch everything and remember it all.
  • If you are willing to buck tradition a tad, I would recommend having a special moment together before the wedding.  For us, Brandon had my bouquet at the spot where we were getting married.  I came out of  the front doors of the Carrick House and met him there.  It was so nice to see him and relax before there were going to be 250 eyes on us.  We did all of our pictures before and it made us so at ease for the wedding.

Bridal party pictures before the wedding

  • If you are having an outdoor ceremony, offer a beverage to your guests.  We had tea and lemonade stations and it was a huge hit in the heat!  We also had our programs printed as fans to help keep everyone cool as well.
  • Brides – if you can get to a spot in the back of the ceremony to watch all the music and everyone be seated I would recommend it!  Standing at the back watching it all come together with my dad is one of my favorite memories.
  • After the ceremony have a spot to meet your bridal party before everyone goes into the reception.  We had the Carrick House designate an area with drinks for everyone so they didn’t have to wait in line.  It was fun to hang out and take some fun pictures!
  • Save your cake topper and eat it when you get home from the honeymoon.  We hardly got any cake at all, so this was great!  We are going to have a fresh one made next year for our anniversary:)

Our cake by Martine's Pastries

  • Before you leave your reception, have your coordinator pull your parents out first to a special area so you can properly say your thank you’s and good-byes.

I have WAY more Do’s than Don’ts, but I will share those next week!

Happy Planning!

-Ty

Twirl Lexington was recently featured in Business Lexington and we couldn’t be happier!  The story is called “A Well Planned Proposal” and was in print on May 28, 2010.  It is now available online as well at the following link:  http://www.southsidermagazine.com/Articles-c-2010-05-27-92864.113117_A_wellplanned_proposal.html

Business Lexingtonreached out to us a few months ago asking to do an article. Meghan Mando came by for an interview and did a fabulous job writing the story and conveying the special attention Twirl pays to brides and bridesmaids.

Just had to share!  I’ll have more pictures and wedding advice next week:)
